From the director of the first ever Iranian film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film (2011’s ‘The Separation’), now Asghar Farhadi has brought us the magnificent drama ‘The Salesman’.
Starring frequent collaborator with Farhadi, Shahab Hosseini, the film tells the story of a high school teacher, Emad, who is co-starring alongside his wife in a small local theatre’s production of Death of a Salesman. However, during the run of the play his wife Rana is assaulted by a mystery attacker. Although Rana is suffering from post traumatic stress, the performances continue. The performances continue as Emad desperately tries to seek out his wife’s attacker.
The film is gripping from start to finish and it is not a surprise that it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film earlier this year, director Farhadi’s second. Shahab Hosseini is a certainly the star of the show, turning in an excellent performance as the husband whose quest for revenge is beginning to take over his life. Hosseini works fantastically well alongside Taraneh Alidoosti who plays his wife Rana. Her performance in the film is absolutely heartbreaking and you begin to feel a strong bond to the loving couple who did not deserve to go through such a trauma.
NWD will certainly be keeping a close eye on these two amazing Iranian actors, as well as bringing you the latest on the next project of director Asghar Farhadi, which the world will be greatly anticipating.
