A Monster Calls is the new Liam Neeson movie, but it’s not your typical Liam Neeson movie. No action, no woman to save, no guns and fast cars. This is Liam Neeson like you’ve never seen him before. This time he plays…..a friendly (yet scary) monster!
Based on the children’s novel by Patrick Ness, the film focuses on a boy called Conor O’Malley. Conor is frightened for his mother, played by Rogue One star Felicity Jones, who has a terminal illness. With her life fading, she can no longer support her son, this on top of Conor having issues at school. Things aren’t looking good for Conor when one night he comes across a ‘monster’ who is a giant humanoid yew tree. The Monster tells stories to acknowledge in the hopes of helping Conor overcome his problems and fix his unhappy life.
The friendly Monster is of course voiced by Liam Neeson, which is not hard to imagine when thinking of Neeson’s warm and welcoming tones. Sci – Fi superstar Sigourmey Weaver also joins the cast as Conor’s Grandmother, whilst Toby Kebbell, star of the recent Warcraft movie, plays Conor’s father, who he is distant from.
This film reminds us a little of The BFG, released earlier this year, which reaffirms the power of your imagination but also friendships. Don’t miss A Monster Calls when it hits UK cinemas on the 6th of January 2017.
