READ THE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW AFTER THE JUMP.
1. What inspired you to create the “Book Trader”? Are you a lover of books / reading?
I love reading, and I had just finished reading The Alchemist in June. Book Trader is heavily influenced by The Alchemist and also features the book being used as a main plot point. I’m now reading The 5 People You Meet In Heaven and I love this book. I’m always finding new ways to find inspiration.
2. “Book Trader” trailer looks like a very emotionally lead story, with books having a higher value than they do today. Do you feel books are being neglected and replaced with ipad, iphone, audiobooks and kobos?
Yeah, but ownership is important. I would rather feel the pages in my fingers and have something to hold. I’m a very visually orientated person so seeing the cover and having a paperback is important to the experience of reading.
3. Please explain this quote: “What if God had 100 books for you and all you had to do was give up 10 of yours?” Is this a metaphor for something else?
In the ‘Book Trader’ film, the homeless man Damian is reluctant to give his books away because they mean so much to him. Cassandra comes into his life and offers him items of greater value and it becomes a game of faith and trust. Having faith in God having more in store for you, sacrificing all you have, for the blessings that you deserve.
4. What do you look for in an actor or actress when selecting cast members for your films?
The first thing I look for is conviction. Someone who can persuade me that they are actually the character they are playing. The second thing is your emotional range. I have to see that you can be high and wasted, then also broken and suicidal (for example sake)… Most of my pieces are realism, and grounded dramas, so I need to know that you can offer an universe for the character you are about to embody.
5. Having gone to the US and gained awards and recognition for your work, coming back the the UK has this change you in anyway?
I’m more hungry for my career to flourish. It’s changed my perspective on the UK a lot because over in the States, my work has been appreciated so much that it feels like home. Now, I don’t focus on gaining viewers or recognition from the UK, it’s always about the art, I just needed that experience to learn from it.
6. With tensions growing surrounding Black Lives Matter movement do you feel the pressure to showcase diversity in your films? Whether that’s though your cast member or the story you create and show.
Not at all. From my very first film I’ve always been diverse and different. I don’t need to push that anymore. Whatever the art needs, I will chase that first.
7. With the up and coming Blame the Consumer triple premier only 3 weeks today away, how do you feel as you get closer and closer. Are you nervous, excited or anxious?
I’m super excited right now. It’s creeping closer and now that all these trailers are being released, I can see the enthusiasm from everyone who has their tickets. It’s such a good feeling getting so much love and support, but I feel like this premiere will be a milestone for us all.
8. Can we expect trailers from “Value of Chrystal” & “Grace of Mine” to be released in the coming weeks?
The trailer for “Grace Of Mine” will be out on the 27th July. The trailer for The “Value Of Chrystal” will be out by the 5th August. Two very strong films as well. Looking forward to sharing these with everyone.
